We are delighted to bring you this 4th and final annual newsletter from the EU-funded RADICAL project, which is now in its final three months

Our coordinator, Professor Justin Holmes from University College Cork (UCC), shares this message:

Welcome to the 4th and final RADICAL project newsletter!

I am delighted to say that in our final year of RADICAL we have successfully developed an electrical sensor for trace gas detection, including atmospheric radicals. This low-cost, portable sensor can be tuned to detect a range of gas pollutants in the parts per billion range, including nitrogen dioxide, ozone, ammonia and radicals, simply by changing the functional organic layer of the sensor. Find out more in our RADICAL sensor overview on page x and our detailed research highlights from the past year starting on page x.

The potential applications of this sensor are vast, and we are excited by the future development opportunities. We are currently building consortiums for future research projects. If this is of interest, please get in touch. Find out more on how to “Get involved” on page x.

In this edition of our newsletter, we provide an update on the current status of the RADICAL sensor and explore the Irish Atmospheric Simulation Chamber (IASC), the first facility of its kind in Ireland. We highlight our recent collaboration with Luper Technologies, and delve into the research journey of Dr. Niall O’Sullivan, a postgraduate researcher involved in the project. Additionally, we offer a comprehensive overview of the events and conferences we have participated in this year, as well as our project publications to date. All RADICAL publications, conference proceedings and other research results are Open Access and available on our RADICAL project repository on Zenodo.

While the RADICAL officially ends on 31 January 2025, this is not adieu. The project website (radical-air.eu) and email address (info@radical-air.eu) will continue to be live for a few years. You can also contact me directly using the details on my university profile page (Prof. Justin D. Holmes).

Slán go fóill,

Justin Holmes,
